Robin, who is a new member of Teachers for Social Justice, explains that while she isn’t a teacher she can still be involved in TSJ projects because she has a stake in the future of education in the city. She also shares the history of the Curriculum Fair which is described on the TSJ website as “providing over 700 educators, activists, parents, youth & community members with a space to share curricula, ideas & resources.”
Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez is a Director for the Albany Park Theater Project and is currently part of the popular production called Feast. Feast is a collection of stories about people’s experiences with food in the city. She joins us over the phone for a lively discussion. Students from Radio Arte’s training program join us afterward to share their own experiences.

Eloy Garcia, FBI Raids in Chicago, S.T.O.P, and Hilda Chavez by MartinWRTE Welcome to First Voice. This is an exciting program that we are happy to make available for you. First we have Eloy Garcia from the Christian Peacemaker Team talking about his experiences in activism. Then we play some of the audio from the press conference for Chicago activists affected by the FBI raids. Following that we read a statement by Southside Together Organizing for Power (S.T.OP) about the death of Damian Turner, a youth activist, which has spurred many to action against the U. of Chicago for closing its Trauma Center. Finally, we play an interview with Hilda Chavez who was interviewed by Martin Macias in Boston. She is trying to help a local indigenous community develop a Fair Trade business so they can support themselves and get out of servitude to local drug traffickers.

Whats up everyone! Welcome to the digital home of First Voice! Thank you for visiting.
We want to share a piece that was done by a member of the First Voice Committee. Sarah Mendoza created this piece about Fair Trade and begins by asking: “think about your day and what you ate, what you bought…bananas, tea, coffee…were any of those products Fair Trade?” Do we really know what kind of impact our choices as consumers have on other countries?
Sarah sat down with Nancy Jones from Chicago Fair Trade to talk about what Fair Trade means to farmers and producers around the world.
This is the definition of Fair Trade as defined by the labeling certification group TransFair USA on its website:
The Fair Trade Certified™ Label guarantees consumers that strict economic, social and environmental criteria were met in the production and trade of an agricultural product. Fair Trade Certification is currently available in the U.S. for coffee, tea and herbs, cocoa and chocolate, fresh fruit, flowers, sugar, rice, and vanilla. TransFair USA licenses companies to display the Fair Trade Certified label on products that meet strict international Fair Trade standards.
If you want to get another view of how Fair Trade directly impacts coffee growers in Ethopia take a look at this trailer for Black Gold, a film that shows the injustices faced by poor farmers who are not properly rewarded for their work, and also the benefits that come with a Fair Trade price.
