Una Mano al Inmigrante: Centro San Bonifacio

November 17th, 2011

Building a Solidarity Economy

October 26th, 2011

Martin Macias, Jr for Radio Arte

The Occupy Wall Street movement continues to grow nationally with over 1,600 cities in the U.S organizing similar protests and encampments. Here in Chicago the General Assemblies attract hundreds of people and the rally on October 22 saw over 4,000 people march from the Financial District to Congress Plaza where later 130 people were arrested by Chicago Police.

Each city is dealing with there own issues and trying to build movements that are big enough to take on the challenges of this era. Some have faced serious resistance from authority. On October 25th in Oakland, the OccupyOakland camp was torn up an later raided with tear gas by police.

But beyond these struggles there is also the question of how to “fix” this economy. If we are trying to build an economy for the “99%” what are the ways we will do that. There are some groups trying to address that question nationally such as the New Economy Working Group and the U.S. Solidarity Economy Network. But locally, what can we do in our cities? Cheyenna Weber is an economic justice organizer working to develop a “solidarity economy” in New York City. She works with SolidarityNYC, a collective she co-founded in 2009 and is also active in GEO (Grassroots Economic Organizing) Collective, “a media collective focused on promoting worker ownership and the solidarity economy.” She joins First Voice for an interview about this effort. You can read here article in Organizing Upgrade here.
