Interview by Emmanuel Garcia

Within the last 10 years, hate crimes of people who identify as LGBT have made headlines around the world. In the U.S. the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year old student at the University of Wyoming; sent shock-waves and ignited outrage in the community. Since then the murders of Angie Zapata in 2008 and Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado in 2009 are a reminder of the homophobia-fueled hate that permeates our society. Everyday LGBT’s are subjected to harassment and have been the target of violence.
The stories of these incidents are often told by a news reporter standing in front of a police “do not cross” line, but rarely do we hear a first hand account.
In 2004 Adam Rash was attacked outside of a Chicago parking lot and lived to tell the story. Listen.

Interview: Florencia Manóvil
November 4th, 2009Interview by Emmanuel Garcia
Last week on Homofrecuencia I interviewed Florencia Manovil director of Fiona’s Script. I interviewed Manovil, a native of Buenos Aires, ahead of her Chicago visit to promote her film at the Reeling 28 Chicago Lesbian and Gay International Film Festival. Manovil has written a colorful movie about a queer screenwriter in search of true love and I was curious to know if this was life imitating art.
Fiona a queer screenwriter living in Oakland is having a fixed case of writers block and can’t decide who her main character will end up with. To make things more dizzying Fiona is caught in between getting over her ex-boyfriend Sebastian and opening up to L, the girl she’s had a crush on; oh and did I mention L was also her ex-boyfriends crush? Who will Fiona end up with and how will her screenplay end?
